10 Best Disney Christmas Movies

https://ift.tt/2A5ggJ4

I'm not ashamed to admit that I love binge-watching Disney Christmas films starting the day after Thanksgiving, so I'm pretty well-versed in heartwarming holiday flicks. From Christmas classics like The Muppet Christmas Carol, to cheesy feel-good movies like I'll Be Home For Christmas, there is a Disney Christmas movie for just about everyone out there. Don't worry, not all of these Disney films are intended for small children! Some of the movies on this list will make you laugh, some will make you cry, and some will simply make you nostalgic for the '80s.

From cute puppies to Halloween holiday flicks, these are ten of the very best Christmas movies that the House of Mouse has ever created for the holiday season.

10. Snow Buddies

Snow Buddies, released in 2008, is a holiday spin-off of the Air Bud franchise. The biggest reason for this movie making the list is the adorable pupperinos pictured above. Who can resist them?! These five cuties follow an ice cream transport truck to a plane and end up flying with the ice cream shipment to Alaska, where they end up training to compete as sled dogs in a big race. Will they pull it off with the help of a friend (and a Christmas miracle)?! You'll have to watch to find out (although no prizes for guessing...).

9. Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas

Look, I know this doesn't hold a candle to the original, but I don't think the kids are going to care when you put it on. This spin-off was released in 1997, but it takes place within the timeline of the 1991 film Beauty and the Beast. It's got Belle in a pretty dress, a grumpy beast with kind eyes and all the talking knick-knacks and cutlery you remember from the first one! I've never met a kid who can resist Beauty and the Beast, so whip up some hot chocolate, make some popcorn, and enjoy a fun family night in.

8. The Santa Clause

The Santa Clause, starring Tim Allen, was released back in 1994 and was an instant hit thanks to Tim's success in Home Improvement.  The movie follows Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) as he unexpectedly makes the transition from a regular, divorcee dad to the next Santa Claus, weight gain and all. The problem, of course, is keeping his new identity a secret from his family. This movie has aged pretty well in my opinion, and remains a heartwarming, Christmas classic that every generation can enjoy.

7. I'll Be Home For Christmas

I'm not saying this is the best Christmas movie ever made, but it stars '90s heartthrobs Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Jessica Biel, so it makes the top ten list for sure. Released in 1998, I'll Be Home For Christmas is about a spoiled college student (JTT) who experiences difficulty getting home for Christmas after being hazed by his friends. At some point during his struggle of self-discovery, he realizes how materialistic and selfish he's been, just in time for the holidays. Hey, it's Disney, what did you expect?!

6. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Yep, this is a brand new one that just hit theaters two months ago. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a retelling of E. T. A. Hoffmann's short story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" and Marius Petipa's The Nutcracker. For those who aren't in the know, it's about a young girl who is gifted a locked egg on Christmas Eve from her deceased mother and sets out in a magical land to retrieve the key. It hasn't had the best reviews, but there's music, dancing, magic, and beautiful special effects. Definitely worth a watch.

5. The Nightmare Before Christmas

This Tim Burton classic definitely belongs on the top ten list despite its dark undertones and the fact that it totally freaked me out as a kid. In the movie, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, Jack Skellington, stumbles into Christmas Town and catches the Christmas spirit despite himself. Unfortunately, his attempts to make everyone in Halloween Town appreciate and celebrate Christmas are misunderstood and misguided. It's unique, it's weird, and it's definitely something that should be watched every year.

4. The Muppet Christmas Carol

This is one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time - and for most people who were kids in the early nineties when it was first released (1992), this was an instant Christmas classic. The Muppet Christmas Carol is a muppet adaptation of A Christmas Carol that includes catchy musical numbers, Gonzo as Charles Dickens, Michael Caine as Scrooge, Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit, and Rizzo the rat as....Rizzo the rat. It's funny and heartwarming at the same time.

3. A Muppet Family Christmas

For anyone born in the late 80s/early 90s, A Muppet Family Christmas is a holiday staple. Released in 1987, this special features musical numbers, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, and even an appearance by Jim Henson. In the movie, Fozzie and the whole muppet gang drop in on Fozzie's mother for Christmas. As if that wasn't cool enough, the entire Sesame Street gang comes by as carolers and Kermit discovers a Fraggle Rock hole in the basement. Trust me, if you're in your thirties, you're screaming right now. You really can't go wrong with this.

2. Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas

Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas, released in 1999, is an anthology-style movie with three different parts, so there's something for everyone to enjoy. The first part, "Donald Duck: Stuck on Christmas," is essentially a retelling of Groundhog Day with Huey, Dewey, and Louie reliving Christmas. The next part is "A Very Goofy Christmas,"  in which Goofy tries to overcome his son's skepticism about Santa Claus. Finally, "Mickey & Minnie's Gift Of The Magi" teaches kids about the true meaning of Christmas. The stories are linked together by narration by Kelsey Grammer (like I said, it was 1999).

1. Disney's A Christmas Carol

In this 3D computer animated retelling of the Charles Dickens classic, Jim Carrey stars in a multitude of roles, including Ebenezer Scrooge as a young, middle-aged, and old man, and the three ghosts who haunt Scrooge. Honestly, the visuals in this movie are so good they will almost make you forget that you know what's going to happen next. If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor and stream it now because it's absolutely mesmerizing.
